  • Choose lead-acid if: budget decides, you plug in most nights, your usage is a few weekends a year, or you enjoy a proven system with a multimeter and a watering can.
  • Choose lithium if: you boondock regularly, run an inverter or big 12 V loads, recharge from solar/alternator, count every pound, or plan to keep the rig 5+ years.

Is lithium worth it for occasional campers?

Lithium pays back through usable capacity, lifespan, and weight when you run loads hard, recharge from solar/alternator often, or count cycles over many seasons.
Can I just swap lead-acid for lithium in my RV?
Mostly yes for the batteries themselves (fittings are standard), but check three things: your converter/charger profile (lithium wants an absorption/float profile it actually accepts), any battery-heater/low-temp-charging protection for below-freezing charging, and your BMS's continuous current rating against big inverter loads.
Why do people say lithium gives "twice the capacity"?
A 100 Ah lead-acid is realistically a 50 Ah battery (the 50% depth-of-discharge rule); a 100 Ah lithium is usable to roughly 90% before its BMS cuts off. Same label, roughly double the usable amp-hours — plus better charge acceptance, which matters as much as storage.
